New Standards for the Sexual Safety of Consumers of Mental Health Services

Last updated: 15 July 2024

The Chief Psychiatrist is responsible for overseeing the treatment and care in mental health services in Western Australia. The Chief Psychiatrist is required by law to develop standards and guidelines.

Sexual safety in mental health services is an absolute priority for the people of Western Australia.

The Chief Psychiatrist’s Guidelines for the Sexual Safety of Consumers in Mental Health Services in Western Australia were released in 2020, and services have been using these to improve safety and care. A standard is now released: The Chief Psychiatrist’s Standard on the Sexual Safety of Consumers of Mental Health Services was issued on Monday 15 July 2024. The Chief Psychiatrist acknowledges all of the consumers, carers, advocates and clinicians who assisted in writing this standard.

Chief Psychiatrist’s Standards are statutory under the Mental Health Act 2014; therefore all mental health services must meet this standard.

This Standard can be found at the OCP website: https://www.chiefpsychiatrist.wa.gov.au/standards-guidelines/sexual-safety-standards/.
