The Mental Health Act 2014 section 303 states that, when the decision is made to admit a child to a ward where there are also adults (aged 18 years and over), services must take steps to ensure that they can protect the child, meet their individual needs.
In 2022 the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist raised concerns that services were not adequately meeting their requirements under the MHA 2014 in terms to their duties to children admitted to units with adults.
The Chief Psychiatrist undertook a clinical review to examine compliance with reporting to review medical records and examine the standards of treatment and care provided to young people to keep them safe of wards that also admit adults.
