The Chief Psychiatrist has responsibility under the Mental Health Act 2014 (MHA 2014) to monitor standards of psychiatric care across Western Australia.

It is a statutory requirement under the MHA 2014 that all seclusion and restraint events involving mental health patients in an authorised mental health hospital are reported to the Chief Psychiatrist as soon as practicable, ideally within 48 hours of the event.

Reporting Seclusion and Restraint

The use of seclusion and restraint must be reported to the Chief Psychiatrist within 48 hours. Reporting is via MHA 2014 Forms 11A-11G for seclusion or MHA 2014 Forms 10A-10I for restraint on the Mental Health Act 2014 Forms page. See also:

Seclusion and Restraint Data

The Chief Psychiatrist is committed to reducing the rate of restrictive practices, seclusion and restraint, in Western Australia (WA). Nationally, WA has been a leader in reducing the rates of restrictive practices. In order to promote transparency in the use of restrictive practices in WA, the Chief Psychiatrist publishes the rates of seclusion and restraint bi-annually for each authorised mental health service.
