8 Apr 2016

The Mental Health Act 2014 s. 539 requires the Chief Psychiatrist to designate as an Authorised Mental Health Practitioner any mental health practitioner who in the opinion of the Chief Psychiatrist has qualifications, training and experience appropriate to the role. The Chief Psychiatrist may also amend or revoke authorisation as s.539(3) of Mental Health Act 2014.

The Chief Psychiatrist is conducting an audit of the Authorised Mental Health Practitioners Database in readiness for the new Database going live in July 2016. The database will be made available to the public as per s. 540(1) of the Mental Health Act 2014.

All Authorised Mental Health Practitioners are responsible for ensuring data maintained by the Chief Psychiatrist is current. This includes;

  • any change in name
  • change of workplace
  • any other details that may affect authorisation.

Authorised Mental Health Practitioners must also maintain Professional Development as specified in s. 539 of the Mental Health Act 2014.
