Authorised Hospitals in WA

Authorised Hospital Register – as of 3 January 2024

The Mental Health Act 2014 invests the Chief Psychiatrist with the responsibility to make recommendation to the Governor to issue an order published in the WA Government Gazette, authorising a public hospital or part of a public hospital for the reception of persons under the Act, and for the admission of involuntary patients.

For private hospitals, authorisation is by licence and endorsement by the CEO of the Department of Health on the recommendation of the Chief Psychiatrist.

In discharging his statutory responsibility noted above, the Chief Psychiatrist has published Standards for the Authorisation of Hospitals Under the Mental Health Act and maintains a Register of Authorised Hospitals.
